Pilgrims Path

A pilgrim follows a golden path between ruined abbey arches and a coastal island beneath a bright star. Every journey begins with a step. Find a walk. Follow your path.

PILGRIMAGE WALK

The Walsingham Holy Mile

Slipper Chapel → Village end of Pilgrims' Way

1 mile (one way)

Badge available

Start near the Slipper Chapel at the Catholic National Shrine. Join the signed Pilgrims' Way towards Little Walsingham and follow the hard-surfaced former railway path into the village. Finish near Walsingham Coach Park at the village end of the path. You can then visit the Church of the Annunciation if you wish. The historic Holy Mile followed the road into the village. This Pocket Pilgrim walk recommends the Pilgrims' Way — the former railway path — as the easier, traffic-free alternative. In the linked North Norfolk walking guide this walk is Walk 10, Little Walsingham via Pilgrims' Way. That guide describes a longer circular route, which is not this one-mile walk.

PILGRIMAGE WALK

Tyburn Martyrs Walk

Westminster Cathedral → Tyburn Convent

2.1 miles (one way)

Badge available

Walk from Westminster Cathedral through central London to Tyburn Convent, near Marble Arch. This is the short 2.1-mile option that Pilgrim Ways publishes as Walk B: Westminster Cathedral to Tyburn Convent — 2.1 miles. It is not the separate 5.2-mile Westminster pilgrimage route. The published short-walk listing describes the route as generally accessible for wheelchairs and buggies, but the walk still uses busy roads and pedestrian crossings, and individual access conditions should be checked. Victoria is useful for the start and Marble Arch for the finish. Westminster Cathedral recommends public transport and has no visitor parking facilities. There is no tidal crossing on this walk. Pocket Pilgrim gives this brief overview only and supplies no turn-by-turn navigation. Use the detailed walking directions linked below, published by Pilgrim Ways, and choose safe crossings on the ground. Tyburn Convent says the Martyrs' Crypt is closed to tours at present — see the notice near the top of this page.

From the mainland at Beal, use the official walking guidance to locate the marked start of the Pilgrims' Way. Follow the posts across the sands towards Holy Island only after checking current conditions and official advice yourself. The tidal sands can be muddy and slippery.

Finchale Camino Inglés — the badge artwork for this walk (not an earned badge)

PILGRIMAGE WALK

Finchale Camino Inglés

Escomb Saxon Church → Finchale Priory

22 miles (one way) · 2–3 days · Overnight stays

Badge available

Begin at Escomb Saxon Church and continue to Bishop Auckland. The longer middle section takes you through the Wear valley towards Durham. Pause at Durham Cathedral before walking the final section to Finchale Priory. Use the linked route guidance and current local signs for the paths and turns. This Pocket Pilgrim entry covers the published walk from Escomb to Finchale Priory, not the whole wider Finchale Camino network. Escomb Saxon Church and Durham Cathedral are Church of England sites with important early Christian and pilgrimage history; they are not presented here as current Catholic churches. The pilgrimage link is St Godric of Finchale and the wider Camino tradition. Day 2 is long: carry sufficient food and water, and check each venue's current opening arrangements — refreshments are not guaranteed along its full length. Check the current Finchale Priory access and opening arrangements before you travel: parts of the site are uneven and can be muddy, and conservation work can close areas. For a fuller route description, see the Friends of Finchale Camino contact details on the linked page. A Pocket Pilgrim check-in or badge is an app achievement. It is not an official Camino passport stamp and does not, by itself, qualify anyone for a Compostela. The linked route guidance explains how pilgrim passports and stamps are obtained on this route: Finchale Priory's own published information records a Camino Inglés stamp in the neighbouring tea room, and the route's own guidance notes a stamp at Auckland Tower in Bishop Auckland. Arrangements change, so check with the route's own information before you travel — nothing here guarantees a stamp or a Compostela.
