The Pilgrims' Way to Holy Island
Beal, Northumberland to Holy Island
Why this walk is special
Marked by posts across the tidal sands, the Pilgrims' Way offers an extraordinary approach to Holy Island. Before the road causeway was built, these posts marked the crossing between the mainland and the island.
Why it matters to pilgrims
Lindisfarne became a major centre of Christian pilgrimage through devotion to St Cuthbert. Arriving on foot across the sands offers a moment to pause before reaching the island and the place of his original shrine.
Tidal crossing warning
Holy Island is a tidal crossing. Pocket Pilgrim cannot assess whether it is safe to cross. Read the official walking guidance and current crossing information yourself before setting out, and follow local signs and advice. The published ROAD causeway crossing times do not, by themselves, establish safe conditions for walking the marked Pilgrims' Way across the sands.

Walking overview
From the mainland at Beal, use the official walking guidance to locate the marked start of the Pilgrims' Way. Follow the posts across the sands towards Holy Island only after checking current conditions and official advice yourself. The tidal sands can be muddy and slippery.
Hazards: tides
Tidal ground, mud and slippery sand. The road causeway times are not a walking timetable for the sands. The start pin sits where the marked route leaves the road at the mainland end of the causeway, by the layby and the Beal Sands car park area. Use the official walking guidance to find the first pole, and check current conditions and advice before crossing.
Pocket Pilgrim gives this brief overview only, and supplies no turn-by-turn navigation. The detailed directions above are the route publisher's own.
