PILGRIMAGE WALK

The Walsingham Holy Mile

Little Walsingham, Norfolk, England

Why this walk is special

Walsingham has welcomed pilgrims for centuries. This short walk begins at the Slipper Chapel, where generations have paused before the final approach to Little Walsingham. The quieter Pilgrims' Way gives you space to walk, reflect and arrive in the village at your own pace.

Why it matters to pilgrims

The Slipper Chapel is at the heart of the Catholic National Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham. Pilgrims traditionally travelled the final mile towards Walsingham as an act of prayer. The journey recalls Mary's response to God at the Annunciation and offers a simple opportunity to bring your own intentions on pilgrimage.

Distance

Walking overview

Start near the Slipper Chapel at the Catholic National Shrine. Join the signed Pilgrims' Way towards Little Walsingham and follow the hard-surfaced former railway path into the village. Finish near Walsingham Coach Park at the village end of the path. You can then visit the Church of the Annunciation if you wish. The historic Holy Mile followed the road into the village. This Pocket Pilgrim walk recommends the Pilgrims' Way — the former railway path — as the easier, traffic-free alternative. In the linked North Norfolk walking guide this walk is Walk 10, Little Walsingham via Pilgrims' Way. That guide describes a longer circular route, which is not this one-mile walk.

Accommodation is not needed to complete this one-mile walk. Elmham House, the Catholic Shrine's pilgrim hotel in the village, is an optional stay after the walk.
